Athlete Spotlight: Laura Brannen and Nic Brinson

This week in our SAGL Athlete Spotlight, we hear from Laura Brannen of the Capital City Silverbacks, and Nic Brinson of the South Carolina Titans.
What's your day job?
BRANNEN: I am a full-time CrossFit coach at CrossFit Boro.
BRINSON: CrossFit coach.
How did you hear about grid and what interested you most about it?
BRANNEN: I first heard about grid last summer. I attended the pro day in Atlanta, and I was selected as a finalist to go to Las Vegas and compete. I think what interested me the most was the fact that there is substitution, and also the speed involved. In grid, if you get tired or you cannot do something, you have a teammate who can help out.
BRINSON: I heard about grid through the SAGL invitational. It sparked my interest because of the high-level skills being performed, and the speed at which athletes were moving heavy loads.
What's your training schedule like?
BRANNEN: I train 5 days a week and sometimes twice a day.
BRINSON: Two to three times a week, I train multiple times a day, with one to two rest days a week.
Have you changed your training style at all to be more grid-specific?
BRANNEN: I have not really changed my training. I attended the Atlantic Regionals last weekend for CrossFit, and that was my main focus up to that point. Grid and CrossFit have some bleed over, so training for one will help the other.
BRINSON: I have had to devote more training to advanced gymnastics skills, but I have always been weaker with a barbell, so I'm constantly training those movements.
What is your past experience with sports?
BRANNEN: At the age of 4 I started gymnastics, and I did that competitively until I was 13. I "burned out" and from there I started playing tennis competitively. My sophomore year in high school I tore my rotator cuff and had surgery. I was unable to play tennis for about year so I picked up running. I ran cross country my last two years in high school and signed with Georgia Southern University to run cross country/track and field in college. After college I quickly found CrossFit, and I have been doing CrossFit for two-and-a-half years.
BRINSON: I played high school basketball and track, and grew up in a gymnastics gym.
Who is your favorite athlete and/or inspiration?
BRANNEN: Everything I ultimately do is because of the Glory of God. Without him none of this would even be possible.
BRINSON: Michael Jordan; childhood inspiration.
Favorite fitness brand?
BRANNEN: I love Lululemon... and I would love some Nike Metcons...
BRINSON: The Barbell Cartel has some pretty cool apparel, but since I was young, Nike has always had my heart.
Do you have any pre-match rituals?
BRANNEN: No pre-match rituals. I just do what I do on any training day.
BRINSON: I pace back and forth until I wear a path into the floor.
What's one of your non-athletic hobbies?
BRANNEN: I love spending time with family, friends, and pets.
BRINSON: Rock climbing.
Any advice for people who are new to grid?
BRANNEN: If you are new to grid it is important to learn how to rotate in and out and help out teammates. Once you start slowing down, it's times to sub out.
BRINSON: Train hard and prepare for anything.
